Buying- Researching Public Data

There is a lot of data that is made available to the public. Most of it can be found on various websites. We have a list of cities and counties that have their data online within the Twin Cities.

There is quite a bit of data that is available, depending on the county and the city. Most county websites have pertinent data for each property such as current owner and their taxpayer address, tax assessed value, tax amount, and lot size or boundaries. Some counties include more information. For instance, on Hennepin County’s website, you can find information on recent recording of documents, last sale date and price, and a satellite photo overlayed with lot lines.

Dakota County includes house information from the city’s assessor’s office, like square footage, beds and baths, and in some cases, a sketch of the house on the property.

Cities, on the other hand, sometimes have house information like Dakota County has.

Minneapolis has the most data available on houses. On the city’s website there is structural information that includes square feet, beds, baths, and more. This sqft information is oftentimes more accurate than what is on the MLS system due to input discrepancies from agent to agent. Also on Minneapolis’ website, you can find the truth in housing report, which contains an energy score report. Perhaps the most interesting information that is available is the inspection permits. You can look at an overview of every permit pulled on the house going back to the mid 1990’s.

Many cities besides Minneapolis, have permit information online. Visit our website to see which cities have what information.

Crime in certain neighborhoods can be a dealbreaker for many buyers. Minneapolis and Saint Paul each have their own crime maps, which is under the public safety section of their websites.  Most of the other cities are on the Community Crime Map provided by LexisNexis, see the link in the description.
